Shakuju Therapy 10 Year Anniversary Classes

Thank you for attending Shakuju Therapy seminar in Boston! This seminar was the 10th seminar in the states (as Boston only, this is the 9th seminar)! We are so glad that so many people joined the seminar, and wish everybody acquired some inspirations from the seminar!

Shakuju Thearpy 10 Year Anniversary Class

Kobayashi sensei and the 10 Year Anniversary gift from NESA

Hara sensei is introducing practitioners!

10 year anniversary t-shirt (designed by Daiki sensei)

The main theme of the seminar was the reconstructed theory such as the relationship between Shaku and Sho (Abdominal pattern) and the classification of fundamental treatment and supplemental treatment. In addition, Kobayashi sensei introduced treatment of Ex-UE9 and Ex-LE 10 as supplemental treatment.

Those who have been studying Shakuju therapy for a long time must be surprised at Liver Shaku Liver deficiency pattern and Lung Shaku Lung deficiency pattern, I guess.

When Shakuju therapy was made up, the concept of "deficency of Jing qi" was more vague than it is now, and it was expressed as "yin deficiency" in the book "Toyo igaku koza 10 kan (Oriental medicine series volume 10)". It was theorized that "deficiency (yin deficiency)" exist on the background of "excess" reactions, Shaku, such as pain, hardness and pulsation on the abdomen, and tonifying this yin deficiency leads to the improvement of Shaku on the abdmen, main complaint and other reference points. Regarding Liver Shaku and Lung Shaku, Shaku on the right and left abdomen, it was assumed that when Shaku (excess) exist on the left abdomen (Liver zone), the right (Lung deficiency) is deficient, because the cause, "deficiency (yin)" was explained in terms of right and left "yin and yang". This is why the abdominal pattern was Liver Shaku Lung deficiency pattern in the past.

Shakuju therapy has been theorized from the clinical practices, it had been no problem clinically, so it had been used. However, the part of the theory is reconstructed now. "Excess" reactions such as "Shaku" and all other excess and deficient reactions are all expressed as "reference points". These reference points are explained as "the fundamental yang (including the narrower deficiency and excess, such as Shaku and reference points)" and on the base of it, it exist "deficiency of Jing qi", "the fundamental yin". There is no theoretical controversies, rather it was more sophisticated and deepened, but the issue was whether it is okay to treat Liver deficiency pattern when the patient has Liver Shaku, and Lung deficiency pattern when Lung Shaku. So, some practitioners on Taishido acupuncture clinic, tried these on the clinical practices, and there was no problem. Please understand the deepened theory and try it on the practices!

Regarding the relationship between the fundamental treatment and supplemental treatment, only the usage of the outer bladder line is the fundamental treatment, and all other treatments, such as the inner bladder line, JJ line, GV line, CV line and points on limbs are categorized as supplemental treatment. Therefore, the fundamental treatment starts from the abdominal contact needling, pulse examination and adjustment, abdominal examination and choosing Sho (abdominal pattern), treatment on the outer bladder line and ends at the treatment on the shoulder in sitting position.

Ex-UE9 and Ex-LE 10 are the border on yin and yang as well as the GV line and CV line, and these have strong power to tonify the deficiency of Jing qi in terms of its changes of reference points.

We wish that the seminar was fruitful to everybody who attended the class and hope to see you soon!!! Please enjoy the practice of Shakuju Therapy!

About Kakisemi kun and the Summer Seminar

Hello! Thank you for reading Shakuju Association blog. Usually, I'm updating articles translated from Kobayashi sensei's writings in Japanese or other senseis' articles in Japanese Shakuju Association blog. But, today, I'd like to write about the other thing, the mystery of the funny creature of Shakuju Association.

Some of you might have noticed that there is a non-acupunctural video on the video bar section on the right. Haven't you noticed yet? Hmm.

This one...

Soo, do you want to know what this strange creature is?

strange creature??

This is called Kakisemi kun. There is annual summer seminar for students of acupuncture students, and this is the special character for the summer seminar.

The summer seminar in Japanese is Kaki (summer) Seminar, in abbreviation Kaki-Semi. The sound "Kaki" also means "persimmon" and "Semi" means "cicada" (in different Chinse characters though), so Kaki-Semi means summer seminar and persimmon cicada. Got it??

That's why this is designed for the mixture of a persimmon and a cicada especially for the summer seminar by O Sensei who is working at Taishido Acupuncture Clinic on Fridays. \(^▽^)/

Yup, we had the summer seminar in the weekend of 18th and 19th August. Many acupuncture students came to study Shakuju therapy. It started from the introduction of theory, abdominal contact needling, pulse adjustment, abdominal diagnosis and back-shu point treatment, then students went through the whole treatment procedures, so they treated each other in the last session of the seminar.

Kaki-semi (summer seminar)

Do you still wonder what the video was?? Actually, for students who have attended the summer seminar three times (three-years education curriculum is common in Japanese acupuncture schools, except some universities), O sensei made the special Kakisemi-kun cell phone accessories (Kobayashi sensei also has it on his cell phone!). And this video is about how to make it.

Hope someday, Kakisemi-kun becomes the well-known Japanese character like "Dragonball"!! Oops, but I don't know what Kakisemi-kun can do... I don't think he can shoot "Kamehameha"...

Teawase-kai

In Japan, we just had a second Teawase-kai; SJT brushing-up workgroup session yesterday.

Teawase literally means matching or joining hands together. This word is often used in the martial arts sphere, when two or more people meet up and compare each other's skill. So, just like the martial arts, many Shakuju therapy practitioners, regardless of his or her skill and experience, gathered together. They were divided into three people groups, one person treats, another is a patient, and the third person is the watcher.

Actually, this third one is the key person. When the therapist marks Shaku and Back-shu points, he/she always have to ask the third guy for check. Except those, everything is depended on its group. So, for some groups, the practitioner and the watcher are checking and arguing each step and various reference points, but for other groups, the treatment session is just like a normal treatment, observed by the third acupuncturist. Imagine, your each procedure is watched... yes, it is a good pressure.

In the clinical practice, an acupuncturist has to face the patient alone. Acupuncturists are prone to be self-satisfied sometimes. To avoid this, it is a good opportunity to meet up other acupuncturists who have the same interests, same passion in common (please read Therapist's principles 6).

Yes, Shakuju Therapy Workshop in Hawaii is going to be held this weekend!! We are looking forward meeting everybody who are interested in Shakuju Therapy!!! Aloha!

Two days seminar in Chiba

Two-days Shakuju therapy seminar was held in Chiba last weekend. This two-days workshop has been held annually since 1997. Many acupuncturists and acupuncture students who have been doing Shakuju therapy gather to attend Kobayashi Sensei's lecture. In clinical practice sessions, Kobayashi Sensei introduced the new supplemental treatment using points between toes. Answering the question from participants, he explained that it is a very useful and effective treatment for symptoms such as a sprain, but put stress on the importance of back shu points for the fundamental treatment rather than using the handy supplemental treatment as usual.

About Shakuju Therapy (5)

In Shakuju therapy, the cause of any symptoms is considered "the deficiency of Jin-qi".  So, treatment is tonifying the deficient Jin-qi, precisely speaking, the pathological deficient Jin-qi.

The Jin-qi in Shakuju therapy is the "vital energy" in other words. Any human being gets old and dies in the end inevitably. Nobody can live infinitely, and treatment to prolong life is impossible. If possible, rejuvenation also becomes possible.

The vital energy is consumed inevitably as one gets older. However, the problem is that one consumes the vital energy more than necessary amount by his/her lifestyle or intemperance. This consumed amount exceeding the original amount is considered as the cause of diseases. This pathetically deficient Jin-qi is what acupuncture treatment is aiming at tonifying.

The living person is soft and warm, or rather hot, the clump of heat. On the other hand, the dead person gets hard and cold. When one becomes sick and gets worse and worse, the person dies. Here, we call the condition of sickness as "cold".

The cold in Shakuju therapy (Hie), refers to not the cold in a narrow sense, such as merely sensitivity of cold, but the cold in a wider sense like this. As pursuing grasping human bodies in Oriental way, we call such cause of any diseases as the cold (Hie), which is easily understandable for the contemporary people. (Please refer to "Acupuncture Core Therapy".)

Shakuju therapy has seminars mainly in Tokyo, but we have seminars in Osaka and Hokkaido in Japan as well. For overseas practitioners, we usually have the annual seminar in summer, however, we are going to have Shakuju Therapy Seminar in Hawaii in March. Hoping many acupuncturists all over the world know Shakuju Therapy. If you are interested in Shakuju Therapy, this is the chance!

USA Shakuju Seminars 2011

Thank you for attending USA Shakuju seminars held in August. This year, there were three days Introductory course in AIMC Berkeley, CA, and two days introductory, two days advanced courses in NESA, Boston.

In both seminars, there were lectures in the morning class, and the treatment demonstration by Kobayashi sensei, practical training session in the afternoon. Lectures were started from the idea of qi, which is the basis of Shakuju therapy, and covered the whole procedures of Shakuju therapy.

As Kobayashi focused on the lecture, there exist the invisible on the background of the visible, so to change the visible, it is important to affect the invisible. In terms of human body, on the background of the visible (main complaint, symptoms and other reference points), there underlies the invisible (the deficiency of Jing-qi). Shakuju therapy is always targetting on this deficiency of Jing-qi.

We are happy that more and more acupuncturists are interested in Shakuju therapy in USA.
